EMvTW 111: Captain Proton's Rocket Ship

NOTE:  You can click on most pictures to get a larger view of them.

Welcome to Star Trek: Inception, the sci-fi show within a sci-fi show.  This next Eaglemoss vs. The World article is going to take a look at Captain Proton's Rocket Ship which we are first introduced to in the show "The Adventures of Captain Proton".  This of course is a reoccurring holodeck program that we are treated to in Star Trek: Voyager and the first time we get to see it is in the episode titled, "Night".

I initially wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this model  as it technically wasn't an actual starship.

Per Memory Alpha and Beta, "the rocket ship of Captain Proton was an Earth starship, a runabout-sized spacecraft in Incorporated Planets Patrol service in the 2000s decade."

If you would like to read more official stuff on this type of ship, feel free to check out the following links:

When I first saw this ship, I was instantly transported back to my youth where they would play reruns of the 1954 TV series of Flash Gordon, where our hero went flying off into space on Zarkov's rocket ship.  You can read more about that ship at THIS LINK.

Hmmm...  I wonder where Tom Paris got his his inspiration from?

Wherever he got the idea from, Eaglemoss has done a great job of recreating Captain Proton's Rocket Ship.

This has got to be one of the heaviest of the standard sized Eaglemoss models.  There is a lot of metal in this one.

At first glance, the model looks like it would not have a lot of details, but as you look closer, you can see that Eaglemoss has actually sculpted and molded in lots of neat little fiddly bits.

Those old school rivets on the wings are a nice touch that shows the attention to details that Eaglemoss can bring out in a model.

The paint work is overly simplistic, trying to replicate the monochrome nature of the story that the ship comes from.  Even so, it is not just some blob of grey metallic paint.  All over the model, there are some subtle additions to break that would be drab look.  All of the windows have received some darker paint to allow them to stand out.

Eaglemoss even included the emblem on the nose of the rocket ship.

Along the bottom of the ship are some sort of parallel streaks.  I'm not sure what they are there to represent.

While we are looking at the bottom of the model, I'll mention that for the most part, the joins and seams are blended well into the model.  The only real noticeable location of any seam lines is where those two external pods are connected to the ship.

I can't really say that this is a simplistic model.  Close examination shows it to be anything but, and although it has a hard time fitting into all of the other ships of the collection, she still shines through as a great piece of work and a nice addition to anyone's Voyager collection.

And that is all I really have to share at this point on this ship.  As for pricing, I will continue with the tradition of rounding up the most inexpensive Buy-It-Now prices from eBay at the time of this article's writing (February 2018).

Eaglemoss = $30

NOTE: Prices were researched last on February 28th, 2018.  You can also currently order the Eaglemoss model right from the company themselves for around $23 (shipping unknown).

Is Captain Proton's Rocket Ship worth the money?  The answer to that is going to depend on your collecting tastes.  Personally, if I wasn't buying every model for review purposes, I don't know if I would have bought it, and that is only because it really isn't my thing.  If I were a completionist, I would definitely say that it's worth the money.  How can you not want to add this to your Voyager fleet?  As a model builder, this model is well built and actually does look nice on display.  Heck, you could get away with showcasing it and only a die hard Star Trek fan would know what it really is.  And from that angle, yes, it is worth the money.  So there you go.

As always, I hope you found this article useful and informative.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to comment below.

So for now, "Live long and prosper!!!"
