EMvTW 109: Borg Queen's Ship (Borg Diamond)

NOTE:  You can click on most pictures to get a larger view of them.

Ten issues ago, Eaglemoss brought us the next vessel in thier Borg series, Issue #99, Arctic One (Assimilated).  You can read my review of that model at THIS LINK.  Sadly, I was not a fan of that model and did not give it a great review.  So Eaglemoss has decided to give it another try with Issue #109, the Borg Queen's ship.

We are introduced to this very unique looking vessel in the Star Trek: Voyager episode called, "Dark Frontier".

Per Memory Alpha and Beta, "The Borg Queen's vessel was an octahedron-shaped starship that was used by the Borg Collective. In Federation encounters with this starship design, it was utilized by the Borg to transport the Borg Queen. The ship was heavily armed, well protected, and, like all Borg ships, capable of transwarp speeds.  The vessel was present when Species 10026 was assimilated in 2375; Seven of Nine and the Borg Queen were aboard while this assimilation took place. Later, the vessel pursued the Delta Flyer when it escaped from the Unicomplex after rescuing Seven. The vessel was destroyed when the USS Voyager collapsed a transwarp conduit it was traveling in."

Right off the bat, I have to say that I am much more happy with this model than the last Borg ship.

Where do we begin with this thing?  Top?  Bottom?  Wait, which way is up?  Like a Borg Cube, it doesn't matter.  But unlike a Borg Cube where we are stuck looking at six very similar (and boring) sides, this thing looks menacing and foreboding right out of the box.

First, the paint work on this model is great!  The color scheme they went with gives the entire ship a dark but brushed metal look to it.  I love this technique as it blends the plastic and metal parts beautifully.  Eaglemoss also seems to have chose the right amount of the exposed energy conduit green to give the ship a nice glowing effect.

The sculpting and molded details are equally fantastic.  Although some details are not as clear on certain parts of the ship, it doesn't really matter because they become buried under a flurry of other details.

Granted, all of the details are very repetitive when you look at every side as a whole.  I've gotten used to this tactic though when it comes to most manufacturer's approach to making Borg vessels.  It would get awfully expensive to produce something that looked different on all eight sides.  That being said, the molded details really impress when you take in all those support struts.  All of the separate little support struts add an intricate dynamic that just wows you when you take the entire model in.

The end caps on the corners of the ship are made up of separate small plates that have been attached into the support struts and the end result gives the ship a bit of an armored look to it as well.

The magic of the overall design is that it can cleverly hide the joins and seams.  The colors of the model and all of those support struts cause the seams to just blend in and disappear.

This model was excellent all around and a very fitting addition to the Eaglemoss Borg fleet.  Forgive the pun, but I would dare say that this model has become the CROWN JEWEL in my personal fleet.

And that is all I really have to share at this point on this class of ship.  As for pricing, I will continue with the tradition of rounding up the most inexpensive Buy-It-Now prices from eBay at the time of this article's (re)writing (February 2018).

Eaglemoss = $28

NOTE: Prices were researched last on February 23rd, 2018.  Sadly, at the time I am writing this article, you can not get the Borg Queen ship from the Eaglemoss website..

I was surprised that the cost of this model is still so low on eBay.  I expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $30 on s standard edition Eaglemoss model, and given the popularity of the Borg, and the fact that this model is so darned cool to have, I am amazed that it isn't going for a higher price.  So I guess what I want to say here is, grab a copy of this model if you can.  It is the best of the Borg so far from Eaglemoss and it will look really cool on your display shelf.

As always, I hope you found this article useful and informative.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to comment below.

So for now, "Live long and prosper!!!"
