Rewrites: NONE YET
We are going to break from the Standard Line of Eaglemoss models to focus briefly on a Special Edition line model. This one is the IRW Scimitar.
We first get to see this starship in the Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) movie.
Per Memory Alpha and Beta, "The Scimitar was a massive, heavily-armed Reman warbird. It was constructed under the command of Shinzon as part of a secret plot to overthrow the Romulan Senate, defeat the United Federation of Planets, and liberate the subjugated natives of Remus."

The first issue I had with the model, really had nothing to do with the model at all. The stand for mine does not connect properly. I have tried and just can't figure it out. Normally, I would just say "oh well", but with the wings of this thing being so thin, not using the stand is going to put undo stress on them.
Editor's Note: Before finally publishing this article, I went back and did some more finagling with the model and the stand. I was able to successfully mount the model to the stand, but it required some forcing to do so. The stand applies a lot of pressure to some of the lower greebles. I would suggest being very cautious when mounting and un-mounting the model. And once mounted, the entire display is front heavy. Be sure to secure the mount peg thoroughly, or lest you find your model taking a nose dive off of your display case.
The sculpt and mold work doesn't look like much from a distance, but upon closer examination... I'm left speechless at the amount of details that were pressed into this model. The wings almost look like that of a mangled moth, with lines a tears criss-crossing their entire surface. You could almost imagine them being able to open up like in the movie. The additional pieces that jut out from the model only add to the predator look of the vessel.
And at the very front of the model, we are treated to even more greebles and nasty bits.
The only part of the ship that did not impress me was at the rear. And in order to see this section, you have to look at it from underneath. This section just comes off looking unfinished to me. It looks like Eaglemoss ran out of source materials to build from and just sort of stuck things in this area of the ship to fill in some huge gaps. I particularly don't like the warp nacelle cowlings. Without any molded details, they just look out of place from this view.
There is so much going on with this model as far as the sculpt and mold work goes, that the join seams are near impossible to really see.
The paint work is where I really have a hard time with when it comes to this model. Right out of the box, it just comes off as being "Just so damned shiny."
But not Firefly/Serenity kind of shiny. The silver paint is so overbearing, that it blots out any other painted details, which forces you to handle the model a lot to actually notice any other paintwork. Eaglemoss should have done some weathering to tone down how bright the ship comes off.
And there are indeed other painted details, you just have to look for them.
And then there are a bunch of tiny painted highlights on the bottom of the model as well.
There are no clear plastics on the model.
And that is all the pictures and comparisons I have to share on this ship at this time. As for pricing, I will continue with the tradition of rounding up the most inexpensive Buy-It-Now prices from eBay at the time of this article's writing. Prices were researched last on July 9th, 2020. As of the writing of this article, I could not find the model on eBay. Luckily, you can currently order the model right from Eaglemoss' US WebStore for around $50 (shipping unknown).
And now we come to my final thoughts on the model. The model is large. You are getting your $50 worth of materials from your purchase. The sculpted and molded details are for the most part, fantastic. It's the paint job that really ruins the model for me. Had Eaglemoss done some sort of weathering, or maybe a wash of Romulan/Reman green to fill in the molded details, it would have gone a long way to making this an overall excellent purchase. While the model does catch one's eye, it is most likely because the sun is gleaming off of it and blinding you. As you stare at the model, you can't help feeling that it is unfinished in some way. I want nothing more than to give my endorsement of this model, but I can't this time around.
As always, I hope you found this article useful and informative. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to comment below.
So for now, "Live long and prosper!!!"

Love the Scimitar since first saw it on screen way back~ I share the opinion the model is too "bright", wouldnt mind it being dark grey though; its sad it has a lot of misalignment issue, I have not seen one where the upper back "fin" are properly aligned; also the smaller wings under the front chin, the rest are superb
ReplyDeleteHi there again and thanks for following along still. For the price tag, I feel that Eaglemoss could be doing better, especially given that these are supposed to be "Special Edition" quality models. It's not the first time though that I have been disappointed in one of these "Special" models. With the collection coming to a close, I suppose I should enjoy them while I can.
