EMvTW 180 - Borg Cube (First Contact)

Whoa!  It's like Deja Vu.  Next up in our Eaglemoss vs. The World Series is the Borg Cube.

We first get to see this starship in the movie Star Trek: First Contact (1996).

Hold on!  Hold on! Hold on!  This review deserves a little more fanfare than that horrible introduction.  So let's try this again...

We have FINALLY reached Issue #180 of the Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection.  The Borg Cube from Star Trek: First Contact (1996) marks the very last Standard Edition model for this collection.  One of my fellow collectors reports that this collection has been going for six years and eleven months.  I personally have been reviewing the Eaglemoss models off and on since November 2014.  If you ONLY invested in the Standard Edition models, and managed to ONLY pay $25 for each one of them, then you would have invested $4500 in your collection.  It has been quite a journey for us collectors, and quite frankly, a fun one for me as a reviewer.

Hopefully, that serves as a better introduction.  Now let us move on with the review.

EMvTW 130: Borg Probe ("Coffin" Ship)

The next two models from Eaglemoss came to the U.S. Webstore like an early Christmas gift, so I ordered them and was very happy to see that they came with thier magazines as well.

The first of the two models is the Borg Probe, which is also known as the "Coffin" ship because of it's unique shape.  This ship appears in the Star Trek Voyager episode called "Dark Frontier".  It also supposedly is in the The Next Generation Episode called "I, Borg", however, it is totaled on the planet so we don't see much of it.

My collection of this type of ship consists of the Eaglemoss model, and a 1:1400 scale Resin Modeler model that I built and painted sometime ago.  While I don't normally do comparisons of my pre-built and pre-pained fleet with models that I have personally built, this was one of those opportunities to really give you a size comparison.

As a side note, my children have nicknamed this ship "The Turd" as they feel that it looks like one.  😅

EMvTW 109: Borg Queen's Ship (Borg Diamond)

Ten issues ago, Eaglemoss brought us the next vessel in thier Borg series, Issue #99, Arctic One (Assimilated).  You can read my review of that model at THIS LINK.  Sadly, I was not a fan of that model and did not give it a great review.  So Eaglemoss has decided to give it another try with Issue #109, the Borg Queen's ship.

We are introduced to this very unique looking vessel in the Star Trek: Voyager episode called, "Dark Frontier".

EMvTW 99: Arctic One (Assimilated)

Next in line for our Eaglemoss vs. The World series is the Assimilated Arctic One ship that we are introduced to in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode that is titled, "Regeneration".

Take a moment to enjoy one of the only two pictures that I have of this thing sitting in it's stand.  I'll explain more later on.

As I started getting into collecting small scale Star Trek starship models, and then wanting to expand my collection, I found a serious lack of  comparative data out there showing me the various small scale pre-built and pre-painted ships available to the collector.  And so I set out to provide this information myself and hopefully help someone make a wiser decision in which model to buy.

The bittersweet news for my Eaglemoss vs. The World series, is that looking ahead, it appears that we will actually see very few comparative articles coming from me in the future.  I'm sad, as it means that my sole purpose for writing these sorts of articles is coming to an end.  But, I'm also happy in that Eaglemoss has far surpassed my wants in a manufacturer who would make models of ships that no one else has produced.   And unlike Hallmark, they are not wasting production time by producing the same model in an updated format every several years.  Check out my articles on the Galaxy Class (article link HERE) and the TOS Era Constitution Class (article link HERE) to see what I mean.

This review is going to focus on the Borg Tactical Cube, also known as the Class 4 Tactical Cube.  We get to see this type of ship in the Star Trek: Voyager episodes called "Unimatrix Zero", parts 1 and 2.

As I alluded to initially, I only have one manufacturer's model to talk about this time, and that would be Eaglemoss.

EMvTW Bonus 05 - Borg Cube

I've now reviewed several Borg ships, and I guess that it is time that we take a look at the Borg Cube which was the first one we were introduced back in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode called "Q Who".

When I was a subscriber, Eaglemoss kept insisting that I be part of the second run of ships in our country (the United States), which left me a bit behind the other U.S. collectors, and that bothered me for some reason.  I eventually had to cancel my subscription to the standard sized Eaglemoss collection back in January of 2015 because finances had gotten a bit tight.  After things settled down, I opted to just buy the models online from reputable sellers on eBay.  For the most part, I pay slightly more in cost and shipping than I would through Eaglemoss directly, BUT, I have more say in when I get my ships.  The downside to this approach is that you are no longer eligible for the free subscriber gifts.  I was a member long enough to get the dedication plaque and the future Enterprise D, HOWEVER, I did not make it to the Borg Cube.  People are now selling it on eBay but for quite a while, the prices were really high, like $150 or more kind of high and judging from the pictures, I was certain that it wasn't worth that kind of money.  I just happened across a seller that had the cube for considerably less and hopped at the chance to add it to my collection and get to review it.

With the addition of Eaglemoss' model, my collection now consists of theirs, a Furuta, a Hallmark and several MicroMachines models.

And we now move on to my tenth "Eaglemoss vs. The World" review and this will be one of the shortest reviews I've written to date.  Let's take a look at the Borg Sphere.  We are first introduced to this ship in the movie, "Star Trek: First Contact".
