EMvTW 119: Hirogen Holoship

NOTE:  You can click on most pictures to get a larger view of them.

Our next Eaglemoss vs. The World article is going to focus on another alien ship.  This time, we will take a look at the Hirogen Holoship.

We are introduced to this form of starship in the Star Trek: Voyager episode titled, "Flesh and Blood"

Per Memory Alpha and Beta, "A Hirogen holoship was a type of starship utilized by the Hirogen that was especially outfitted with holographic projectors.  Such a vessel was stolen by Iden and a number of Hirogen created holograms in 2377, it was the vehicle used to drive Iden's Rebellion."

And sadly, I have pretty much quoted everything that Memory Alpha had to say about this ship.

If you would like to read more official stuff on this type of ship, feel free to check out the following links:

Hirogen Holoship Information: Memory Alpha LINK and NO Memory Beta LINK

Luckily, Eaglemoss collector's will get a magazine that has a bit more information about the ship.  Unfortunately, the article is also laced with a bunch of stuff other stuff about the episode as well.

WARNING!: I'm going to get this out of the way right now.  Normally, I don't like to talk about the stands as I like to mainly focused the article on the quality of the model.  But it is my civic duty to warn my readers of the danger of this particular stand.

This stupid thing left me scratching my head and wondering...

I'm not sure who the Starfleet Engineer was that devised this contraption, but I highly recommend that you avoid using it, unless you want your model to take a nose dive off your display shelf and onto the floor.  And there are parts on your model that certainly will not appreciate that long drop.

OK!  I got that out of the way.  Let us forget the stand and move on with the review.

Here is the model in all of it's glory.

After getting my hands on this model, I now understand why the previous issue, the USS Firebrand NCC-68723 (Freedom class) (ARTICLE LINK HERE) was missing all the molded and sculpted details.  This Hirogen model went and took all those details for itself.  HOLY COW!

And when i say it is highly detailed, I am not saying that it is detailed like the Federation Remote Control...  errr... I mean Federation Holoship.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out my review of Issue #85, the Federation Holoship at THIS LINK.  No, this Hirogen model is WAY better as far as execution goes.

I know that I keep throwing links at you to my other articles, and this will be the last one, I promise.  Of all the links, THIS LINK is probably the most important one, because this holoship review is going to make several references back to the 51st Issue from Eaglemoss, The Hirogen Hunter.

The sculpt and mold work are just amazing on this thing.  There are all sorts of nooks and crannies that you have to look for where Eaglemoss decided to squeeze in some sort of detail.  The greeble work alone should merit some sort of award.  Although I'm sure they create a fragile breaking point for the model, all the little antennas that jut out from various parts of the model are a cool addition.

Not only are there all sorts of little fiddly bits sticking off of this thing, Eaglemoss also duplicated the "rune" effect from thier last model.  You can see these runes more clearly in this next picture, where it encircles the rear of the bulbous command module.

The paint work is on par, if not better than the first Hirogen starship that Eaglemoss produced.  Eaglemoss has even duplicated the Hunter ship's golden camouflage paint effect of certain areas of the ship.

And Eaglemoss does not get stingy on the paint either, because they continue to dab the occasional bit of paint on other areas of the model to really help bring this thing to life.

While the rear of the ship isn't as exciting as the rest of the model, Eaglemoss still tried to give us as much detail as possible back here.

Besides doing a decent job of molding the engine exhaust ports, there is even some well applied paint which adds to the nice look.

Just like the hunter ship, the holoship's "nacelles" are also covered over with some sort of protection plating.  The plating is nicely molded with some interesting greebles tacked on, and the camouflage paint job finishes off the look.

And, just like the hunter ship predecessor, there are "nacelles" hiding behind those protective plates.  Those nacelles are molded nicely as well and there is even paint applied to them to give them some extra color as well.

The joins and seams are hid very well.  Eaglemoss did a fine job of blending them with the rest of the model's details.

Like the Hirogen hunter ship predecessor, there are no clear plastics, but those sorts of parts are really were not needed this time to add any kind of WOW factor to this model.  It can carry itself with out the need for those sorts of details.

And that is all I really have to share at this point on this class of ship.  As for pricing, I will continue with the tradition of rounding up the most inexpensive Buy-It-Now prices from eBay at the time of this article's (re)writing (March 2018).

Eaglemoss = $33

NOTE: Prices were researched last on March 28, 2018.  As of the writing of this article, you can also currently order the Eaglemoss model right from the company themselves for around $23 (shipping unknown).

We now come to the part of my article where I get to tell you if I think this model is worth the money.  I have gotten used to seeing the prices of the standard Eaglemoss models hover at around $25 to $30.  Quite frankly, given the quality of this particular model, I'd be comfortable paying $35 to $40 for it.  A lot of work went into producing a great representation of the ship and it will look great on your shelf. It most definitely is worth the money.

If you happen to already own the Hirogen Hunter Ship, then the two of them compliment each other really well.

As always, I hope you found this article useful and informative.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to comment below.

So for now, "Live long and prosper!!!"
