EMvTW Special 27 - Son'a Battleship

Rewrites: None

We can definately see that Eaglemoss has gotten out of its pandemic slump in October 2021 as the post "Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection" models just keep coming.  And from the looks of it, we are expecting to see quite a few more Special Edition and Bonus (Extra) Edition models to come.  The next Special Edition model to sail our way is the third Son'a ship to be presented in the collection.  I guess it was only a matter of time before we got the Son'a Battleship.

We first get to see this starship in the movie "Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)".

Per Memory Alpha and Beta, "The Son'a battle cruiser was a type of large warship utilized by the Son'a. These vessels were armed with photon torpedoes and isolytic bursts, a variety of subspace weapon banned by the Second Khitomer Accords. Two of them outmatched a Federation Sovereign-class starship."

And now a word from Peter Griffon...

As I said, this is the third Son'a vessel to come at us, and once again it is in the large scale of a Special Edition model.  I give up tying to figure out Eaglemoss with this stuff and what constitutes a ship being produced as a large Special Edition model over making it one of the smaller Bonus Edition models.  Clearly, it's not a licensing issue because that theory is disproven by the last three Star Trek (2009) models I reviewed.  I suppose that they figured that since the other two Son'a ships were this big, they had to take more of our money by making this one large as well.  Whatever the reason, it just makes me mad because there have been quite a few Special Edition models that should never have been made in this larger format.  And the three Son'a models would have been just as good in the smaller, and less expensive Standard Line or Bonus Line of models.

Sigh...

Let us take a closer look at this model...

Looking at the model, you can't help but think that you are looking at some high-tech boomerang, like something Batman might use to fight his enemies.  It looks like a very simple design from afar, but once you move in for a closer look, you can really appreciate the work that Eaglemoss put into their version of this ship.

There is a lot of sculpt and mold work that covers the model with lots of tactile details.  Just looking at one of the wings, you can make out ridges, panel lines, and even tiny windows that all has been molded into the model.

There is a central piece that rises over the top of the ship, looking very much like a Xenomorph Queen's head.  The detailing is sharp and makes the ship have a fierce profile.

You really need to turn the model over though to take in some of the other details, including a deflector dish tucked between two pincer like extensions.

The paint work is well done too, doing a great job of highlighting the molded details.  Across the model, there appears to be some weathering in the form of what is called "washing" which gives a streaked, and dirty appearance.  This ship has clearly been heavily used.  Engine intakes and exhausts are brightly painted to try to give these areas a glowing effect.

Some areas have lots of tiny windows painted in, which gives you a sense of how massive this ship actually was.

The model is put together well too.  I really had a hard time picking out the joins and seams on mine.

And that is all the pictures that I have to share on this ship at this time.  Prices were researched last on November 13th, 2021, and as of the writing of this article, I was able to find the model from a seller on eBay for around $61 (shipping included).  You also can order the model right from Eaglemoss' US WebStore for around $50 (shipping unknown).

Other than the model being larger than I prefer, I really couldn't find anything to complain about.  It looks like Eaglemoss pulled off a good execution and delivery for this one and I'll be honest, I'd even be comfortable paying the eBay pricing if it meant I could add this one to my collection.  And as you'll soon see, it does make for a nice addition to a Son'a invasion fleet.

BONUS ROUND!!!

Every once in a while, I'll have a little extra stuff to share with you that sort of fits in with my comparison articles.

If I'm correct, the battleship should bring the Son'a fleet to a close for the regular Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection.  In the end, you end up with a rather intimidating looking fleet of large models.

Besides the Battleship, you can also see (and read my reviews of) Special Edition #19 - Li'seria (Ru'afo's Flagship / Son'a Destroyer) (REVIEW LINK) and my pretty recently reviewed Special Edition #25 - Son’a Collector Spaceship (REVIEW LINK).
